Digital Video (DVR)
Digital Video Recording (DVR) takes conventional video signals, converts them to a digital format and compresses and stores them on a computer hard drive.

DVR offers numerous benefits when compared to traditional tape recording. These include:

  • Faster and easier retrieval - search by time, date, camera, location etc. to find the required incident, omitting the need to search through hours of tape
  • Higher image quality - in addition to higher quality digital images, these can be copied without degrading their quality
  • Greater accessibility - images in digital format can be readily transmitted to a remote location for viewing using a network. They can be easily copied, printed, emailed or faxed
  • Improved usability - a recent study found that 50% of digitally recorded data was used due to the improved indexing and retrieval facilities, compared to only 1% of data recorded on tapes
  • Reduced operating costs - DVR operation is largely 'set and forget'. The specifications are programmed once and the system then records without further operator intervention. Traditional tape systems involve the regular changing and replacing of tapes, head cleaning and belt and gear replacement
